Fractional CMO

Remote Fractional CMO: when it works, and when it does not

A remote fractional CMO is a senior marketing leader who holds the CMO seat for a fraction of the week and works mostly at a distance. It is the same model as a part-time CMO, under the name used by international and VC-backed teams. iytro, founded in 2019 with 400+ clients, places these leaders 1 to 3 days a week from Paris, Barcelona and New York.

Key takeaways

  • "Fractional" is the international name for a part-time CMO; "remote" describes how the leader works.
  • It fits distributed teams, post-funding phases and gaps between two CMOs.
  • Remote is the wrong choice when the team needs daily in-person leadership.

What is a remote fractional CMO?

A fractional CMO is a senior marketing leader who takes the CMO seat for a fraction of the week. The term comes from the English-speaking, VC-backed startup world. In France the same model is called a part-time CMO. "Remote" adds one thing: the leader works mostly or fully at a distance, and comes on site for the moments that need it.

Many international teams are distributed anyway. The founder is in one city, sales in another, engineering in a third. For them a remote leader matches the normal way of working. This page helps you decide whether it fits your situation. For the weekly logistics and price detail, see the remote part-time CMO page.

What situations lead a founder to a remote fractional CMO?

  • After a funding round. The board expects a marketing plan and a leader to carry it. Recruiting a full-time CMO takes time you may not have.
  • Between two CMOs. An interim leader keeps the team, the budget and the agencies on course while the search runs.
  • Entering a market where you have no office. The leader would be remote from headquarters whatever you do. The fractional CMO in Europe page covers multi-country set-ups.
  • A founder who still runs marketing. You need someone senior to take it over without adding a full-time executive salary.
  • A location where senior marketers are scarce. Remote widens the pool to people you could not recruit locally.

How does it compare with a full-time CMO, an agency or a freelancer?

Full-time CMO

A full-time hire makes sense when marketing needs a leader every day and the company can define the profile precisely. If you would hire that person remotely anyway, the question becomes one of volume and risk. A fractional leader gives you senior judgement for the days you need, with no long-term commitment, and helps you write the brief for the future hire.

Agency

An agency is remote by nature, so the comparison is easy to make. The agency delivers against a brief and reports on its own work. A fractional CMO is inside your team: in your leadership meeting, in your CRM, accountable for the whole plan. They often manage the agency for you.

Freelancer

A freelancer brings one skill and works on tasks. They rarely challenge the strategy or manage people. A fractional CMO decides what the freelancers should work on and judges the result.

What does it cost?

At iytro a leader is embedded 1 to 3 days per week, or as an interim, at 1,100 to 1,500 € per day. Two days a week is about 10,000 to 12,000 € per month. The volume is adjusted month by month. Working remotely does not change the day rate: you are paying for a senior leader's decisions. The offer is detailed on the part-time CMO page.

What do the first 90 days look like at a distance?

  • Days 1 to 30. Start in person if you can: a few days with the leadership team, sales and marketing. Then interviews by video, access to tools and data, and a written diagnosis.
  • Days 31 to 60. A plan with priorities, budget and owners. Weekly rituals in place: team meeting, one-to-one with the CEO, a shared dashboard.
  • Days 61 to 90. First campaigns delivered under the plan. A first report to the board. A view on the team and on the hires to make.

The test at day 90 is simple. Does the team know its priorities without asking? Does the CEO spend less time on marketing? If the answer is no, the set-up needs more presence, more days or a different profile.

When is a remote fractional CMO the wrong decision?

  • Your culture is in-person and informal. Decisions made at the coffee machine will bypass a remote leader.
  • The marketing team is junior and has never had a manager. They need someone next to them.
  • The role is mostly execution. Then you need hands: look at 1+1, a small subscription team.
  • Sales and marketing are in open conflict. That is repaired face to face.
  • You already know you need a five-day leader for years. Recruit, and use an interim only to cover the search.

iytro was founded in 2019, created the Part-time CMO model in France and is B Corp certified; 86% of its clients recommend it. Its offices are in Paris, Barcelona and New York, and its leaders work with companies elsewhere on site when needed and remotely otherwise. See the Lifen case study and the Coinhouse case study.

Can a fractional CMO be fully remote?

Yes, if your team already works at a distance and decisions are written down. A few on-site days at the start and at key milestones still make the work faster.

Is a remote fractional CMO the same as outsourcing marketing to an agency?

No. The fractional CMO is a member of your leadership team who owns the plan and the budget. An agency executes a brief. The CMO often manages the agency.

What does a board need from a remote fractional CMO?

A clear plan, a named owner and regular reporting. A remote fractional CMO can provide all three and can prepare a full-time hire if the company needs one later.
